As we go about our day, our body can accumulate various traumas (big and small). The body copes for the aches and pains with various compensations such as moving in new ways to avoid pain. These new movement patterns create changes throughout the connective tissue involved – often developing restrictions. These restrictions can develop in the tissue and the fluids surrounding/protecting the brain and spinal cord (the craniosacral system). Treating the various symptoms that comes with the development of these restrictions can be difficult to find; that’s where CST comes in.
What is Craniosacral therapy?
CranioScaral therapy (CST) is a non-invasive, gentle hands-on technique that aims to relieve tension in the central nervous system (CNS) and promote a feeling of well-being by eliminating pain and boosting health and immunity. It is thought that through manipulation of the bones in the skull, spine and pelvis, a more regulated flow of cerebrospinal fluid will be encouraged with the goal of returning it to baseline. Cerebrospinal fluid movement can be compared to a pulse or a heart rate; it follows a regular pattern that functions best when in a normal resting state. When an area is injured this flow is disrupted. If we can return the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to baseline, we maximize healing potential of the injury.
CST Can be used as part of a treatment plan with the following conditions but not limited to:
Migraines/headaches
Neck & back pain
Scoliosis
Disrupted sleep cycles
Fibromyalgia
Alison has taken a 40+ hour course to be able to offer this technique at momentum physio. CST is an hour long treatment, however Alison often employs some CST techniques into various treatments.
